Transformation of river association
The South African Rivers Association SARA, is expanding in order
to draw more operators to its ranks. SARA was formed in the 80's
to make provision for the burgeoning commercial river kayak industry.
Its objectives were to train river guides and to set professional
standards and a code of conduct for the industry. Through its
endeavours and efforts of its luminary, Graeme Addison, South
Africa obtained a respectable and professionally managed eco-adventure
activity which many South African and tourists have enjoyed over
the years, trips on the Orange River in canoes and "crocs'
becoming the order of the day. To make provision for expansion
in the industry, SARA is broadening its horizons. Its constitution
will be debated and various role-players will contribute to the
process of change. Currently a name change from SARA to APA [the
African Paddling Association] is being adopted.
